Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for Safeway Foods in Alexandria, VA for 23 years, retiring for the second time in 2001. We are a family owned and operated business with two locations. Our Fairmont Location has been serving the local community for over 50 years. We acquired our Fairview, Curry Chapel location in 1987 which has been in operation since 1923.
He lived happily with his wife and best friend Judy for 49 years. Joseph was fiercely proud of his children and in turn his grandchildren. His family was his priority, and he made sure no one ever went without anything they needed or wanted even if it cost him his own comfort. We are a full service funeral home respectfully dedicated to serving all faiths, offering traditional services, memorial services, cremation services, monument sales, and advanced funeral planning. He was educated in Marion County schools, having graduated from West Fairmont High School, Class of 1958. At the age of 19, he moved to Elkins, WV, and worked as a cabinet maker for Metal Labcraft Co., a company that builds cabinets for hospitals.

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Elizabeth McDonough of Fairmont, West Virginia, who passed away at the age of 81, on December 19, 2022. Joseph loved his life and never turned down an opportunity to take on a challenge like volunteer firefighting or traveling around the world or working 3rd shift so that he could earn his first bachelor’s degree during the day.
Joseph started out as a milk man’s assistant when he was young and ended his working life by being awarded the title of Professor Emeritus at Fairmont State University where he taught classes in both graduate and undergraduate programs. Joe held multiple advanced degrees including a Doctorate of Information Systems from Robert Morris University.
